Coinciding with Brian Clarke’s 70th birthday, Brian Clarke: A Great Light opened at Damien Hirst’s Newport Street Gallery on 9 June 2023. The exhibition, presenting the artist’s contribution to the continuous development of the stained glass medium, includes a selection of works made since 2002.

The exhibition features a number of new, never-before-seen works. This includes a 42-square-metre wall of mouth-blown and etched glass titled Ardath; a wall of 210 of Clarke’s collages; the autonomous panels of the ‘Tributes’ series; the ‘Pendants’ plinth-mounted panels; new works from the ‘Kabinettscheiben’ series; and the large stained glass artworks of HENI the Eighth and Stroud Ossuary.

These works from 2022 and 2023 are placed in conversation with stained glass from the previous 20 years of Clarke’s career: his stained glass screens; ‘Studies for Caryatids’ stained glass panels; and selections from his leadworks series.

Originally set to close on 24 September 2023, the exhibition was extended to 7 January 2024. The collages on display at Brian Clarke: A Great Light went on sale for the first time on HENI Primary. Applications closed on 7 December 2023.
