Ardath
2023
Ardath is a monumental autonomous stained glass artwork created by Brian Clarke in 2023. Spanning 450 square feet, it takes the form of an eleven-column glass wall, with each column composed of eight rectangular panels. Flooding the space in light and colour, Ardath features motifs drawn from the natural world, including Clarke’s signature poppies, daffodils and foliage. Its title, derived from Hebrew, means 'Blooming Meadow'.
The work was realised using innovative technologies in the medium of stained glass. It is composed of three layers of mouth-blown, etched glass, assembled without the lead cames that traditionally support and join stained glass panels.
Among Clarke’s largest autonomous artworks to date, Ardath was first exhibited at Brian Clarke: A Great Light at Newport Street Gallery, from 9 June 2023 to 7 January 2024.
In 2025, Clarke completed his monumental commission, Concordia, at Bahrain International Airport, expanding on the artistic and technical ideas explored in Ardath on an even greater scale.
