Brian Clarke first explored the heraldic motif of the fleur de lys in the series of paintings created in 1998 and 1999, and 2004. Fragmented Fleur de Lys expands this research through a composition of seven panels, in which the symbol is deconstructed into its essential graphic linework.

In the same year, Clarke translated this work into lead.
