Overview

Brian Clarke: Atlantes & Astragals accompanied the exhibition of the same name at Christie's, London, in 2011, with an introduction by Francis Outred and David Linley. The catalogue reproduces works from the exhibition: Clarke’s stained glass ‘Studies for Caryatids’, shown for the first time in Europe, and seven new abstract paintings. An essay by art historian Martin Harrison analyses the connections and contrasts between these series, drawn together under Clarke’s enigmatic title, and situates these works within his broader artistic output. A contribution from Hans Janssen, Curator of Modern Art at the Gemeentemuseum, the Hague, explores three of the paintings, made for the museum’s Projects Gallery, and first exhibited there in Brian Clarke: The Quick and the Dead in 2011.
