Brian Clarke: Transillumination was published by the Tony Shafrazi Gallery, New York, to accompany their exhibition of the same name in 2002. This catalogue presents Brian Clarke’s then-new approach to form and colour, as he began to create unleaded autonomous stained glass artworks, free from linear leading. In the Brian Clarke: Transillumination catalogue, the ‘Studies for Caryatids’, which subvert expectations of the subjects and styles possible in stained glass, were reproduced for the first time, making their public debut at the exhibition. A landmark catalogue in Clarke’s work, it features an essay by art historian Martin Harrison, exploring the works from the exhibition, their artistic context and their significance.
