Ossuary
2012
Ossuary is a series of paintings created by Brian Clarke in 2012. Inspired by ossuaries – ancient religious sites where human bones are stored, often arranged in rows or decorative patterns – the works present compositions of skulls rendered in calligraphic lines. The two square canvases, The Senate and A Choir of Angels, also incorporate four equilateral crosses in their upper sections, recalling motifs from Clarke’s 2011 Black Paintings series. The paintings in the Ossuary series were developed through a related body of works on paper, the Ossuary Studies.
