Brian Clarke’s Black Paintings from 2011 each feature four equilateral crosses placed in a horizontal band across the upper section of a dark painted canvas. In the lower sections of the works, Clarke employed a range of techniques, including paint drips, gestural brushstrokes, hand and foot imprints and calligraphic lines.
