Grid Paintings
1978
Brian Clarke’s Grid Paintings are early explorations of the grid motif dating from 1978. Realised in parallel with the Early Cross Paintings series, these works expand Clarke’s formal vocabulary by replacing the crosses within the pattern with small squares. In Golden Section, Clarke also experimented with a cross-shaped canvas.
Clarke would continue to explore the grid motif throughout the 1980s and 1990s, further developing it into lattice-like structures, as seen in the paintings from the Sienna series.
