Mosaic for A Complex Modern Building 1 and 2
Mosaic for A Complex Modern Building 1 and 2
1990
'Mosaic for a Complex Modern Building 1 and 2' are two large-scale, autonomous mosaics created by Brian Clarke in 1990. The works incorporate leftover materials originally produced in the first half of the 20th century for a refurbishment project at the Reichstag in Berlin. These were later rediscovered at the Munich studio of the German stained glass and mosaic manufacturer Franz Mayer.
Clarke salvaged the original materials, including larger gold and silver squares, and employed them to create a grid motif along the edges of both works. He then used smaller mosaic tiles alongside larger, irregular fragments to fill the central sections with abstract compositions.
