Untitled (Sarah Bernhardt)
Untitled (Sarah Bernhardt)
1995
In 1995, Brian Clarke created Untitled (Sarah Bernhardt) for a private residence in Brazil. This stained glass window features a portrait derived from a black and white photograph of French actress Sarah Bernhardt in the title role of Adrienne Lecouvreur. In 2023, Clarke also dedicated a print to the actress.
Untitled (Sarah Bernhardt) reflects Clarke’s long-standing interest in the intersection of photography and stained glass. He explored the relationship between these media in his 1974 Preston Minister Guild Window, featuring silk-screened photographic images on glass. Between 1994 and 1999, Clarke further refined this technique in Brian Clarke and Linda McCartney: Collaborations, a series of autonomous glass panels created in partnership with photographer Linda McCartney.
