In 1994, Brian Clarke installed a stained glass and mosaic programmed at the Schadow Arkaden, Düsseldorf, Germany, a small luxury shopping complex. His contribution was part of a series of artwork commissions located throughout the structure, which was designed by architect Walter Brune. These commissions involved several interventions and architecturally integrated works within the distinctive domes and cupolas of the retail centre.
Clarke’s stained glass, a rectangular composition of 270 square metres, was designed to form the glazing of an atrial rooflight. In the final phase of the project, Clarke designed the hand-cut glass mosaic ceiling for one of the entrances, which was realised using Venetian glass smalti.
Clarke also made designs and maquettes for a proposed artwork for another of the centre's skylights, but this stained glass remained unrealised.
