In the stained glass screen Orchids and the Void of Lust, Brian Clarke contrasts foliage and bright colours with a stark black rectangle. In the 2020 catalogue Brian Clarke: The Art of Light, Paul Greenhalgh considers this:

‘Somehow this intervention pulls the tropical flora into a more urbanised, garden-like environment. We are either inside a space where the outside is a dark void, or outside, with a dark interior close by. Either way, the rectangle limits the space and hints at something dark, not far away from this paradise. Again, opposites meet.’

In this artwork, the orchids are portrayed through the technical innovations pioneered by the artist. Employing a new technology to avoid the use of lead cames, this folding screen can fully interact with light and modify space, variously integrating with or disrupting its surroundings.

Orchids and the Void of Lust exists in an edition of 10 unique variants plus 3 artist's proofs, published by HENI.
