Haus der Energie, EAM Kassel

1992
Kassel, Germany
DESCRIPTION

For the headquarters of EAM, Kassel, a German energy company, Brian Clarke created a stained glass ‘skin’ installed in 1992. This integral artwork comprises 2,971 square feet (276 square metres) of mouth-blown stained glass and covers the entrance hall, the staff area and the canteen of the building.

The headquarters of the energy company was designed by Bieling & Bieling and von Gerkan, Marg & Partners of Hamburg. Clarke’s glass programme is incorporated into the whole of the north-facing wall, and is notable for its use of translucent white opalescent glass.

Colour in Architecture notes:

‘Clarke's ability to link internal architectural space with external natural space at its zenith, and the subtle interplay of colours and transparent tones make this area one of the most remarkable in the recent history of art in architecture. When interviewed about this extraordinary space the office staff from the company expressed great enthusiasm for the optimism it created.'
