Glebe Place

1984 - 1986
Private residence, London, United Kingdom
DESCRIPTION

50 Glebe Place in Chelsea, London is home to an interior designed by Brian Clarke as an encompassing work of art, consisting of a ceiling fresco, a marble, slater and brass mosaic floor and a woven wool rug. This integrated set of artworks was designed for the house of Frank Lowe, which formerly belonged to the artist and architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

The 610-square-foot fresco was painted by Clarke in oil directly onto plaster. Clarke produced this substantial work, combining his signature geometric forms and organic cut-out shapes, on scaffolding over a period of months.

The floor mosaic is made of 7,500 cut pieces of Italian marble. A wool carpet sits in the centre of the mosaic, completing the multimedia composition of the room-as-artwork. The rug is an adaptation of Clarke’s 1984 oil painting Urban Site Plan and was woven in 1986 in North India.
