An Art Random series book published by Kyoto Shoin International, Brian Clarke (Art Random) explores his stained glass and paintings from 1979 to 1990. Paul Beldock’s introductory essay, 'Brian Clarke Revisited', printed in English and Japanese, investigates change and continuity in Clarke’s work, from his days at Oldham School of Arts and Craft to his most recent artistic developments.

Beldock explains:

‘As his work matured, nourished by his exposure to the disciplines and complexities of architecture, a surprising turn of events has occurred. The greater Clarke's involvement has been with the rigours of architectural collaboration, the freer and more expressive his work has grown. Paradoxically, the restrictions and constraints imposed by architectonic deliberation have been the key to a world of greater expressive gesture and confidence. The self-imposed geometry, the preoccupation with structure and purity of form, far from leading him into a cul-de-sac of doctrinaire limitations has provided him with the aesthetic infrastructure for a new incarnation of his idiomatic code.’
