Studies for Unrealised Paintings
2009
This series of works was created by Brian Clarke in 2009 as studies for paintings, which ultimately remain unrealised.
The works portray the Brotherhood of the Nazarene, active in Seville, Spain, a city cherished by the artist. Also known as the ‘Hooded Brotherhood’, it is among the religious Cofradías that traditionally participate in the city’s Holy Week processions. Members of this brotherhood wear penitential garments consisting of a tunic and a distinctive conical hood (capirote), which completely covers their faces to symbolise penance and anonymity. In his works, Clarke presented the evocative processions of the brotherhood in a horizontal format, rendering the figures’ tunics and pointed hoods in vibrant shades of pink and yellow.
