Lifelines
1978
Brian Clarke's ‘Lifelines’ comprise three prints, each in an edition of 50. The works feature white horizontal lines on a silver background, combined with one, two or three segments of neon pink, blue, and yellow, respectively. These coloured segments are positioned along the vertical and horizontal borders of each composition.
By 1978, Clarke was spending increasing time in London and eventually established a studio near Liverpool Street station. These prints reflect his transition from rural Derbyshire to the urban, technologically driven city environment. The London context also exposed Clarke to the visual aesthetics of the punk era, with ’Lifelines' incorporating elements of punk graphic design and a bold, high-contrast colour palette.
