Brian Clarke’s ‘Newsprint Collages’ and ‘Graphic Works’ from between 1982 and 1987 combine collaged elements, from scores of music to photographs, with rectilinear geometric symbols.

Featuring newspaper, dripping black paint, hatching and deletions, patched together, these works look back to Clarke’s 1977 series 'Dangerous Visions', in which the artist repairs a slashed canvas with paperclips and safety pins.

Clarke would return to newspaper in his stained glass artworks that thematised the Francis Bacon trials in 2003.
