Blazing Devotion
Blazing Devotion
2025
Released by HENI Editions in April 2026, Brian Clarke’s Blazing Devotion is a limited-edition print derived from his large stained glass window created for the Wimbledon Windows architectural project in 2021, itself based on a watercolour from his Vespers series.
Blazing Devotion features one of Clarke’s most enduring motifs: the poppy. The composition suggests a cluster of flowers, with slender, fluid stems and translucent scarlet petals set against a vibrant blue background. However, the forms quickly shift into a dynamic arrangement, reflecting Clarke’s distinctive exploration of abstraction, light and colour.
Speaking on the relationship between his Vespers works and stained glass, Clarke observed: "Poppies are the most fragile, the most delicate and vulnerable of flowers. The petal is so thin that it transmits light. Light doesn't fall on it and bang off in a reflective manner like it does with most flowers; it passes through it. And, of course, that makes it, in my mind, very like stained glass."
This work is part of a series of silkscreen prints made in connection to Clarke's stained glass practice, and was conceived and completed by Clarke in the final months of his life. The rest of the prints are planned to be released over the next few years.
