Studies in Large Glass
2002
Brian Clarke’s ‘Studies in Large Glass’ from 2002 are autonomous stained glass panels created by re-adapting designs made for earlier architectural commissions.
Fish is derived from a design originally created in 2000 for the Al-Faisaliah Center in Riyadh. It specifically references a panel located on the building’s ground floor and part of a broader thematic representation of Saudi Arabia’s native fauna.
Petals on Grass and Study for West Winter Garden are based on Clarke’s designs for the unrealised 2001 commission for the West Winter Garden at Canary Wharf.
These works were created using the artist’s original technique of ceramic-glaze-printed float glass, first developed for the commissions of the Muhammad Ali Center and the Al-Faisaliah Center. The works consist of three layers of quarter-inch-thick float glass, with each layer printed with dot patterns in yellow, blue and black, respectively. The dots reference both digital printing technologies and the Ben Day dot technique, in which small, closely spaced coloured dots combine to form images that become fully legible only from a distance.
