G2-03 Orchids and the Void of Lust
2017
The stained glass screen Orchids and the Void of Lust by Brian Clarke presents a lush composition of foliage and vivid floral forms unfolding across the surface, their brightness sharply offset by a stark black rectangle.
In the 2020 catalogue Brian Clarke: The Art of Light, Paul Greenhalgh writes:
"Somehow this intervention pulls the tropical flora into a more urbanised, garden-like environment. We are either inside a space where the outside is a dark void, or outside, with a dark interior close by. Either way, the rectangle limits the space and hints at something dark, not far away from this paradise. Again, opposites meet."
This folding screen was produced with an innovative technique that eliminates the lead cames traditionally used to support and join stained glass, allowing the glass to interact freely with light and space. Orchids and the Void of Lust exists in an edition of 10 unique variants plus 3 artist’s proofs, published by HENI.
