G2-24 Night Orchids
2018
In the stained glass folding screen Night Orchids, Brian Clarke developed a subject first explored in his Night Orchids drawing series and in his Lead Night Orchids leadwork series. The screen translates the orchid motif into an immersive, architectural form featuring white flowers on a black ground.
As Clarke explains in a conversation with Robert Storr in Brian Clarke: Night Orchids (2016), these works "are imaginings of coloured architectural experiences, huge walls of stained glass flickering with liquid colour, that sort of thing, a sort of harnessed euphoria."
This folding screen was produced with an innovative technique that eliminates the lead cames traditionally used to support and join stained glass, allowing the glass to interact freely with light and space. Night Orchids exists in an edition of 10 unique variants plus 3 artist’s proofs, published by HENI.
