Gridline
1990
The Gridline screens are two autonomous stained glass works designed and fabricated in 1990 by Brian Clarke. Each screen measures 303 × 353 cm and incorporates Clarke’s signature grid motifs in contrasting colour combinations.
Gridline I features a grid composition in red and yellow. A free-flowing calligraphic lead line and irregular lead grids disrupt the order of the underlying structure. A painterly blue square occupies the upper right of the composition, a motif derived from Clarke’s 1980 screenprint Time Lag Zero, produced to commemorate the fifth anniversary of Olympus UK.
In Gridline II, a blue and white grid is interrupted by yellow and green amorphs.
