G2-10 Fez

Brian Clarke’s stained glass folding screen Fez is named after the famous Moroccan city and was inspired by repeating patterns found in Islamic, non-figurative art. The work exists in multiple colour variants. In the 2020 catalogue Brian Clarke: The Art of Light, Paul Greenhalgh described it as "a vibrant pattern in greens, yellows and blues, that nods toward masterpieces in architectural tile."
Clarke has been fascinated by Islamic art since the early 1980s when he was commissioned by the Government of Saudi Arabia to design stained glass for the Royal Mosque at King Khalid International Airport. For that occasion, he studied the traditions of Islamic ornamentation, an experience he translated into Fez.
This folding screen was produced with an innovative technique that eliminates the lead cames traditionally used to support and join stained glass, allowing the glass to interact freely with light and space. Fez exists in an edition of 10 unique variants plus 3 artist’s proofs, published by HENI.
