Beaverbrook Spitfires
2017
Beaverbrook Spitfires is a series of eight unique autonomous artworks in stained glass and ceramic glaze created by Brian Clarke in 2017. Each work in the series features colourful Spitfire silhouettes against a painterly brown-gold ground, evoking cloud-like forms within a black field.
This series extends Clarke’s exploration of the Spitfires motif, which he first developed in his Spitfires paintings and Spitfires drawings between 2010 and 2017. The motif was first translated into autonomous stained glass in the Summer Solstice Spitfires series of 2016. In 2015, it was realised on a monumental scale in the Lexington Street Spitfires architectural installation.
