Genius is Dull Charisma is a Bore
1977
Genius in Dull Charisma is a Bore is an early work by Brian Clarke. It presents an abstract composition in which rubber haemostatic straps are arranged vertically and parallel at the centre, anchored with nails to the upper edge of the support on one side and to an orange block on the opposite side. Irregular segments of colour are painted between the straps, some dripping onto the block. On both sides of the composition, inscriptions are handwritten in capital letters in black and red, including Clarke’s signature, ‘1977’, ‘Oldham’, ‘Sex’, and the work’s title ‘Genius in Dull Charisma is a Bore’.
