Computergram Paintings
1980 - 1983
From 1980, Brian Clarke began exploring the geometric ‘computergram’ symbols that became a defining motif in his work. Between 1980 and 1983, he produced the Computergram Paintings series, comprising canvases centred on patterns of computergrams set against varying backgrounds. Derived from the light-metering displays of Olympus OM System cameras, the computergrams featured in this series build on Clarke’s first use of these geometric blocks and shapes in his paintings and stained glass for the Olympus European Headquarters in Hamburg of 1980–1981, as well as in his Olympus Screenprints series produced for Olympus Optical between 1980 and 1982.
