Wimbledon Town Hall Development
Wimbledon Town Hall Development
1992
In 1992, Brian Clarke designed a stained glass roundel for Wimbledon Town Hall, a Classical-style municipal building on The Broadway, Wimbledon, London, designed by Bradshaw, Gass & Hope and inaugurated in the early 1930s. The building served as the headquarters of the Municipal Borough of Wimbledon and later the London Borough of Merton until the council relocated to Crown House in Morden in 1985. Between the late 1980s and the early 1990s, the building was redeveloped for retail use as the Centre Court Shopping Centre.
For this space, Clarke envisioned a large-scale stained glass roundel with a foliage motif set against a blue background, incorporating free-flowing linear elements in shades of yellow and orange. The commission remains unrealised.
