Hungerford Bridge
Hungerford Bridge
1996
In 1996, an international design competition was held to add pedestrian walkways to the existing Hungerford Railway Bridge, which spans the River Thames between Westminster Bridge and Waterloo Bridge in London.
Brian Clarke submitted a proposal for a full-span footbridge to be constructed above the railway bridge. Preserved as a model, his design features sinuous walkways flanked by protective glass screens. These screens display colourful grid motifs animated by circular elements, echoing the stained glass skylights Clarke created the previous year for the NotreShopping Centre in Rio de Janeiro.
