Holborn Place
2000
In 2000, Brian Clarke created a series of designs for a stained glass installation at Holborn Place, an eight-storey steel and glass building designed by Foster + Partners at 33 Holborn, London.
Built to serve as the headquarters of J Sainsbury’s plc, the building contains office floors that overlook a full-height glazed atrium. This opens onto Holborn Circus through a curved glass façade, allowing views deep into the core of the building. The atrium also includes a six-storey glass staircase suspended from slender steel rods, one of the largest glass staircases ever constructed.
For this space, Clarke envisioned a monumental, suspended glass panel featuring a vertical arrangement of his signature fleur-de-lys motifs. The panel was designed to engage both the interior space and the surrounding urban environment, remaining visible from the street through the building’s transparent glass façade.
The project remains unrealised.
