Hammersmith Hospital
1993
In 1993, Brian Clarke created the designs for large-scale stained glass installations for the interiors of the Clinical Research Building and Hammersmith Cancer Centre at Hammersmith Hospital in London, designed by architects Future Systems.
Clarke envisioned a 58-square-meter stained glass rooflight to be installed beneath the external rooflight glazing in the main waiting area, as well as two stained glass screens for the glazed walls of the entrance hall. Responding to the context, he selected glass types and colours specifically intended to enhance a sense of calm and tranquillity for visitors.
Although the project was ultimately not realised, a window based on Clarke's designs was produced as an autonomous work in 1994. It consists of 49 individual square panels and features red and green linear elements set against a blue and white background.
