Cliveden Window
Cliveden Window
1994
Brian Clarke created this window for incorporation into the 1994 modern extension of Cliveden House in Buckinghamshire. The mansion, now a luxury hotel, was originally founded in 1666 by the 2nd Duke of Buckingham. It was later rebuilt in 1852 by architect Charles Barry for the 2nd Duke of Sutherland in the style of an Italianate villa.
Clarke’s stained glass window for Cliveden House integrates drawn sections of a composite capital in the lower part, uniting the volutes of the Ionic order with the acanthus leaves of the Corinthian. The composition also features amorph elements and incorporates slices of agate stone, set against a grid-patterned background in the tones of red and orange.
