Brent Cross
1994
Located in Hendon, North London, Brent Cross Shopping Centre was developed by the British property development and investment company Hammerson plc. Opened in 1976, it was the United Kingdom’s first out-of-town and fully enclosed shopping centre, modelled on the American mall concept.
An extension of the Centre began in 1994, increasing its capacity to 120 stores and adding a new multi-storey car park. As part of the refurbishment, the original low ceiling was replaced with a glass dome to introduce more natural light into the interior. Brian Clarke created a series of stained-glass designs for the new dome, featuring variations with a single ring, two concentric rings and ring sections in coloured glass animated by amorphs.
Clarke’s designs were ultimately not selected for the project, and the dome is now glazed with clear glass.
