2017

Brian Clarke’s stained glass folding screen Fez was inspired by repeating patterns of Islamic, non-figurative art. Named after the famous Moroccan city, the screen is ‘a vibrant pattern in greens, yellows and blues, that nods toward masterpieces in architectural tile.’ (Paul Greenhalgh in Brian Clarke: The Art of Light, 2020).

Clarke has been fascinated by Islamic art since the early 1980s when he was commissioned by the Government of Saudi Arabia to design stained glass for the Royal Mosque at King Khalid International Airport. For that occasion, he studied the traditions of Islamic ornamentation, an experience he translated into the present work.

Fez exists in an edition of 10 unique variants plus 3 artist's proofs, published by HENI. They were created using innovative technology, which removes the need for the lead cames that traditionally support and join stained glass.
